Prohibition 37 is a physician-led, nationally recognized, and award-winning vertical cannabis company in New Mexico. P37 is highly focused on the customer experience and science of the medicinal and recreational effects of its many products. Our name is derived from The Marihuana Tax Act of 1937, which was a U.S. federal law that effectively criminalized the possession and distribution of marijuana. While it did not directly ban the cannabis plant, it imposed strict regulations and heavy taxes on its cultivation, sales, and use. This made it nearly impossible to legally engage in these activities, leading to a de facto prohibition of cannabis. The Act played a significant role in shaping the modern approach to marijuana regulation in the United States.
SOCIAL EQUITY AND JUSTICE
The Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 disproportionately targeted minorities, particularly African, Mexican, and Jewish American communities. While the act itself did not explicitly mention racial or ethnic groups, the implementation and enforcement of the act were marked by tremendous racial bias and discrimination. Law enforcement, for example, selectively targeted and arrested individuals from minority groups and used marijuana-related offenses as a pretext for discriminatory actions. This contributed to the disproportionate impact of the Act on minorities, perpetuating racial stereotypes and injustices for generations to come. Our mission at Prohibition 37 is to reverse decades of cannabis-related injustice and create a healthy, communal, and scientific approach to cannabis use.
