The victory came during a historic night for mixed martial arts as the UFC made its first-ever trip to Serbia, bringing the Octagon to Belgrade Arena.

For Team Urbina, P37 and the Albuquerque fight community, it was an unforgettable moment.

Gilbert Urbina Makes a Statement at UFC Belgrade

Urbina entered the Octagon facing more than just a dangerous opponent.

Čepo was making his UFC debut with significant support from the European crowd, and Urbina received one of the loudest negative reactions of the night during his walkout.

Once the cage door closed, none of it mattered.

Čepo came forward aggressively in the opening exchanges, but Urbina stayed composed. As Čepo rushed forward, Urbina dropped him with a sharp jab before following him to the canvas and unleashing a series of unanswered strikes.

The referee stepped in at 1:01 of Round 1, giving Urbina the TKO victory.

The performance was impressive enough to earn Gilbert a UFC Performance of the Night award.

From Albuquerque to Belgrade

While the victory happened thousands of miles away in Serbia, much of the work behind it happened right here in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Urbina trains at Jackson Wink MMA Academy, one of Albuquerque’s most recognized MMA gyms and a facility that has helped develop generations of professional fighters and world champions.

Gilbert has repeatedly spoken about the importance of the team surrounding him—from his coaches and training partners to his brothers and family.

For Urbina, fighting has always been a family affair.

His brothers have been part of his development as a martial artist, pushing one another through training while continuing a family fighting tradition that helped shape Gilbert into the athlete competing on the UFC stage today.

That combination of family, elite coaching and New Mexico’s deeply rooted combat-sports community continues to fuel the next chapter of his career.

A Historic Night for Gilbert Urbina—and Another Step Forward

The victory improved Urbina’s professional record and added another knockout to his UFC résumé.

More importantly, it provided another opportunity for Gilbert to show what he is capable of when everything comes together.

He walked into an arena filled with fans supporting his opponent, stayed composed under pressure and finished the fight in just over a minute.

By the end of the night, the fighter who had been booed during his entrance was leaving Serbia with a victory and a Performance of the Night award.

That’s one hell of a way to represent Albuquerque.
